NEW PLAYER'S GUIDE
by TeT, June 1 2006
Welcome to Larkinor! This guide will walk you through the first few levels of the game, giving you the basics on what to do.
If you haven't started your first character yet, the suggested method is to select fighter from the "preset" drop down menu as shown in the image on the right. You will learn how to create your ideal character after you have played for a bit.
YOUR HOUSE
In your house you will have 30 silvers and an extra weapon. You are already equipped with a weapon and a shield. When you have finished exploring your house, click the "Exit" button to leave the building. This button can be found on various screens throughout the game.
MOVING AROUND
You use the four compass direction buttons (North, East, South, West) to move around the island. When you are beside a wall (south in this example) or the sea (west), you won't be able to move in those directions. As you walk around you will encounter monsters. This is indicated both by the text on the screen, and by the appearance of a little blue monster in the middle of the compass as shown in this example. You can click this button to fight the monster, or you can try to run away.
FIGHTING
Once you are in a fight, click on your left hand to hit the monster. This is the hand your weapon was automatically equipped in at the start of the game. Your shield is in your right hand. You can hover your mouse over each of the hand icons to see this for yourself as shown in this example. After each hit, the text on screen will tell you how much damage you did to the monster, how much damage it did to you, and how many hit points it has left. Keep in mind you only have 30 hitpoints at the beginning of the game, and not all monsters will be easy to kill. If you think you are going to lose, the click the "run" button to try to escape before it kills you.
After you have won or ran away from a fight click the "continue" button to return to the island screen. Then click on the "rest" button to restore your hitpoints.
Now you may continue to walk around looking for monsters and exploring the island until you reach level 2.
YOUR NEW LEVEL
Congrats on reaching level 2! You now have more hit points, do more damage, can get new equipment, and will see a few new monsters. The first thing you want to do is to distribute your attribute points. Click on the "inventory" button to go to your inventory screen. For your first couple of levels it is advisable to put your attribute points into persistence, as persistence is the largest factor in determining how many hitpoints you gain each time you gain a level. To save your changes, click the large "accept distribution" button after adding your attributes and before exiting your inventory screen.
The following is a very basic breakdown of the uses of the six different attributes. For a more detailed explanation, please read through the Character Guide.
Strength |
Increases the amount of damage you inflict per hit. Each point in strength also increases your backpack capacity by 1 kg. |
Intelligence |
Intelligence is the attribute for magic. You can not level your magic skill if your intelligence is too low. (You can learn how to use magic in the Mage Tower .) |
Dexterity |
Dexterity defines how high your piercing/slicing, striking/smashing, and ranged skills can be. |
Luck |
Luck is most important for diggers. Certain amounts of luck allow you to dig new items. It also plays a small role in hitpoints, and just about everything in the game. |
Quickness |
If your quickness is too low, some monsters will be able to hit you twice in one round. |
Persistence |
This is the main attribute for hitpoints. Each point in persistence also increases your backpack capacity by 1 kg. |
For a "persistence fighter" character, the basic attribute point distribution strategy is as follows:
Strength |
Equal to your level. |
Intelligence |
None. |
Dexterity |
Level / 1.5 (which is 2/3 of your level). |
Luck |
None. |
Quickness |
(Level / 1.5) + 3. |
Persistence |
All additional attribute points. |
EQUIPPING YOUR CHARACTER
Now that you have distributed your attribute points, click on the level up tool to see what weapons and armour you need for your new level. The Market is often the best place to purchase these things, although in later levels you might find it more beneficial to make them yourself. Once you have all the new items you need, go back to your inventory page. Select the item you wish to equip from the "Backpack" drop down list, then click on the part of the body you wish to place it on. If there was an item on that body part already, it will be replaced with the new item and the old item will be placed in your backpack automatically.
SELLING ITEMS
Most monsters you kill will drop some of things they were carrying. These may be sold at any General Store or Weapon Store . Stores will give you 50% of the value of any item. There are also a number of useful things you may purchase at these stores. All General Stores carry the same items, but each Weapon Store carries a unique set of weapons and armour.
TEMPLE
Some monsters will afflict calamities on you () which will weaken your character in various ways. You are able to cure these at the Temple . Simply click on the "Heal Calamity" button that matches the calamity you have until it goes away. When you die, you lose everything in your pack. All money and items not equipped on your body will be gone. The only way to stop this is to get insurance. Insurance will allow you to keep all of your items, and some of your money. This can be purchased from the Temple for 10 silvers per character level by clicking the "Buy Insurance" button . The temple also carries special items such as the prayer wheel (allows you to pray when you aren’t close to a temple) and the miracle satchel (regenerates some hitpoints for every step you take).
MISSIONS
Now that you are outfitted for your new level, you are ready to start missions. There are two types, King's missions, and Pub missions. King's missions are started in the Palace and you must have 50 silvers to pay the king to accept the mission. Pub missions are found in any Pub by buying an import beer for 8 silvers. Each mission will have rewards, and the King's missions will give you an imp's mushroom (eat it to gain one attribute point) for each mission you complete. It is suggested that you start with the first pub mission, as you will obtain a small amount of money, some armour, and a map. Whenever you accept a mission, you will see directions on your screen when you leave the building. Keep in mind that there are walls, and you might have to go around. Also, use the mission maps on this site to navigate the labyrinths and riddles.
FIGHTING OTHER CHARACTERS (PvP)
You are able to attack any character with a red arrow next to their name: . Be sure to check what level they are first (by hovering your mouse over the name), because initially most other characters will be much stronger than you. The winner of a PvP will win between 1 and 100 fame points (which are near-worthless to most characters and players).
HOW TO MAKE MONEY
There are basically seven ways of making money.
- Kill monsters and sell the items to the General Store, Weapons Store or place them for sale on the Market.
- Dig and sell the items to the shop or place on the market. You can buy a shovel from any General Store. Try digging where there are no buildings.
- Missions can provide some very nice rewards.
- Gamble at the Casino . This is also a great way of losing money.
- Steal using the drop down menu, or (if you are a subscriber) from other characters.
- Rob houses. This is a subscriber-only feature.
- Market play: buy low and sell high, or build on-demand equipment and list it on the market for other characters to buy.
Digging is the quickest and brings in money faster then the others. Options four through seven are not recommended for new players.
BUYING A NEW HOUSE
You won't need a new house for your first few levels. Once you do, go to the palace and see what styles are available. You will also want to get traps at the Fortress to attempt to keep robbers out of your things.
EVIL PERSON
When you have been stolen from or your house has been robbed, you will see a reminder on your screen of who the evil person is, where they were last seen, and how long since they last clicked. You may attack your evil person even if they are a lower level. If you win, you will usually receive your things back if they still have them. Sometimes you receive other things as well.
